7.8-magnitude earthquake rocks Ecuador

Seventy-seven people died and nearly 600 more were injured Saturday by a 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Ecuador's central coast, the country's vice president confirmed.
Vice President Jorge Glas, who is in command while President Rafael Correa returns from the Vatican conference in Italy, said early Sunday that the death toll has risen to 77. At least 578 were reported injured.
In a televised address reported earlier, Glas asked the country to try to remain calm and work together as emergency responders help those affected.

"We have activated all the emergency resources available...and we're in a state of exception," he said in the address.
There is no immediate threat of a tsunami, Glas wrote in a tweet, but some areas vulnerable to rising tides will be evacuated as a precaution.
The quake rattled central Ecuador and could be felt in northern Peru and southern Colombia. No injuries were reported there. A tsunami threat was issued for the coasts of Ecuador, Colombia, Costa Rica, Panama and Peru, The Associated Press reported.
In the capital of Quito, more than 100 miles northwest of the epicenter, the quake caused buildings to sway for about 40 seconds. Some people ran into the streets out of fear, the AP reported.
